Coach 9: Dec 9, 2025 Update

This month, we continue reporting on the seats for coach 9. On November 9th, Ron Ginger drove to Bird-in Hand, PA, to pick up the seat backs and cushions from Double E Carriages LLC. He returned with them on the 11th. They were set in place on the partially assembled seats.

The seat cushions sit on oak runners which slide on the cast iron frames. A very clever mechanism causes the seat bottom to change its angle as the backrest is moved to face the other end. This keeps the seat angled high in the front edge making it more comfortable. The old seat runners were not well shaped and they caused excessive wear and chipping. Harold Downey redesigned them and is making the new runners. Ron and Eric will stain and varnish them and install them in the next couple weeks.

The seats are in the process of being installed into Coach 9 - being built by the volunteer craftsmen at the WW&F Railway Museum in Alna, Maine.
