Archives FAQs
What is the Wiscasset, Waterville and Farmington Archives and Collections?
As a Museum, we are dedicated to discovering and preserving our history — in photos, documents, equipment, buildings and physical artifacts — of everyday transportation life in the Sheepscot Valley of Maine in the late 1800’s and early 1900’s.
What do you have in the archives?
We have been actively accumulating and documenting two-foot railroad history in Maine for over 25 years. It is probably the largest such collection anywhere. We also feature truly historic railroad equipment that is in active operation. And we build from scratch replicas of historic cars and engines.
Where are the archives located?
The Archives are located at WW&F Museum headquarters (Percival House) at 97 Cross Road, Alna, Maine 04535
Who might be interested in visiting the Archives?
First, railroaders and volunteers involved in building and operating Maine 2-foot railroad museums. Second, historians, modelers and railfans.
When are the archives open?
The Archives are currently not open to the general public. Access for research purposes is available to representatives of other railroad and historic Museums.
How do I request access to the archives?
Appointments can be arranged by contacting the WW&F Archivist at archivist@wwfry.org
Why is access to the archives restricted?
The Archives are located in spaces that are not now accessible to most people. We hope to change that in the future.
How do I donate materials to the archive?
The Archives seeks donations of archival material and artifacts associated with the Maine two-footer railroads’ eras of operations. To donate to the WW&F archives, contact the Archivist at archivist@WWfry.org. She will get back to you with instructions.
How can I personally help the archives?
Sustaining the archives is a labor-critical process and we are always seeking Volunteers. You may be an archivist, a librarian, an historian, a techy or a student. We will train you. You will become a part of a dedicated family, and you will even probably become a railfan! [show link to sign up page]
How can I further support the archives?
The archives don’t run on coal! There are substantial costs to maintain and grow the archives every year, such as archival materials, shelves, and technology maintenance. Please consider a financial donation to our mission (insert link).
