Sheepscot Valley Autumn Sunset Steam Train

Experience the WW&F Railway as daylight fades over Maine’s Sheepscot Valley.
This special evening excursion takes passengers on a steam-powered journey from Sheepscot Station to Trout Brook, following the WW&F’s historic narrow gauge railway through the woods, fields, and hamlets of rural Alna. Departing in the late afternoon and evening, the familiar scenery of the Sheepscot Valley takes on an entirely different character as the autumn sun sinks toward the horizon and twilight settles over the railway.
As darkness descends, the experience continues aboard historic coaches illuminated by the warm glow of oil lamps. With steam drifting past the windows, the rhythmic sound of the locomotive ahead, and lamplight illuminating the passenger cars, the return journey offers a glimpse of what evening travel aboard Maine’s narrow gauge railways might have felt like more than a century ago.
Special Historic Coach Seating: These evening trains are planned to feature Franklin & Megantic Coach No. 2, a historic passenger coach usually on display in the Museum’s Exhibit Hall and rarely operated in regular service. WW&F volunteers are also working toward having the newly constructed Wiscasset & Quebec Coach No. 9 ready for a special preview ahead of its official Spring 2027 debut. If construction and finishing work progresses sufficiently, Coach 9 may be substituted for Coach 2 on one or both of these trips, offering passengers an exciting first opportunity to experience the Museum’s newest passenger coach.
Come experience steam, autumn scenery, twilight, and the glow of oil lamps aboard one of Maine’s most distinctive fall train rides—and enjoy an early glimpse of the newest addition to the WW&F passenger fleet.
- Ticket price includes the steam train ride as well as parking at Sheepscot.
- Passengers requiring extra assistance, including those in wheelchairs can be accommodated on this train in standard fare seating. Wheelchairs can not navigate First Class / Historic cars.
- Pets are not permitted on the Autumn Sunset Steam Train.
The Autumn Sunset Steam Trains depart Sheepscot station (97 Cross Road, Alna) promptly at 5:30pm.

Classes of Service & Seating Options
The WW&F offers a variety of coaches and seating options. When purchasing your Autumn Sunset Steam Train tickets, you may select from one of the following classes of service and seating arrangements.
Coach Seating – Standard Fare
Adult, Youth, Child, and Senior/Military/Member tickets are for open seating, first-come / first-served, aboard one of our closed coaches. Seats in Wiscasset & Quebec Coach 3 are padded walkover style. whereas bench seating is provided in Combine 8. Handicap / wheelchair access is available in Combine 8.
Historic Coach 2 – First Class Fare
Seating in historic Franklin and Megantic Coach 2, built in 1903 and lovingly restored by Maine Locomotive & Machine Works is available for additional fare. Coach 2 features plush velvet seats that can be flipped to face the direction of travel. When not in service, this car is kept on display in our museum.
Special Preview – Elegant Coach 9
Instead of coach 2, seating may be substituted aboard newly constructed Wiscasset & Quebec Coach 9. Built by WW&F volunteers as a faithful recreation of an 1894 passenger coach, these special preview rides offer a rare opportunity to experience the world’s newest wooden passenger car ahead of its official Spring 2027 debut.
Note: Either Coach 2 or Coach 9 will be used for First Class passengers, depending on Coach 9’s suitability for service. We can not promise that Coach 9 will be available at this time Tickets aboard historic coach 2 will automatically be transferred to coach 9, if available; tickets for coach 9 will not be offered separately.

Special Note
The Autumn Sunset Steam Train does not include connecting service to SeaLyon Farm (or admission to any special events). Please refer to the Pumpkin Pickin’ Train for tickets aboard a farmstand excursion.
Substitutions Due to Circumstance
We endeavor to operate the Sheepscot Valley Autumn Sunset Steam Train over the entire 3.5-mile route of today’s WW&F Railway using a historic steam locomotive. However, for reasons outlined in our policies, we reserve the right to substitute a shorter route (usually turning at Top of Mountain station), a different locomotive, or alternate passenger accommodations.
Passes, Vouchers and Discounts
We will be pleased to honor passes redeemed as the standard coach fare on the Sheepscot Valley Autumn Sunset Steam Train. Upon checkout, please select the appropriate discount for a Lifetime Pass, Alna Resident, or similar pass.

The train was incredible-the coal, the smoke, the bell and that WHISTLE! Easy to immerse yourself into the past and imagine what life was like long ago.
Highly recommend! We were there roughly 2 hours including the hour long train ride.
