WW&F 9 mixes it up with Monson 3 for a One-Day Special Event
The 2026 WW&F Annual Picnic is going to be a not-to-miss steam spectacular featuring BOTH WW&F 9 and Monson 3 under steam hauling a “mixed” consist to Trout Brook and return. Combined with a huge memorabilia and model train sale, “first class” rides in Franklin & Megantic coach 2, scheduled meets at Alna Center between each train for photography, and displays by R. Duck Locomotive Works – this picnic will be one to remember. Oh, and it is a picnic, so food will be available on site for purchase!
WW&F 9 with Mixed Train: 11am, 1pm, & 3pm
The star of the WW&F will be leading a mixed consist of W&Q coach 3, combine 8, and boxcar 56 to Trout Brook and return. Seating may be offered in boxcar 56 – pending crew availability – allowing you to ride as a hobo for some or all of your journey.
Monson 3 with Mixed Train: 10am, 12pm, & 2pm
By special arrangement with Maine Narrow Gauge RR Co & Museum and Maine Locomotive & Machine Works, we are welcoming Monson 3 back to steam on WW&F rails. Number 3 will be leading a mixed train of “first class” Franklin & Megantic coach 2, Sandy River combine 14, and Turner Centre dairy car 65 all the way to Trout Brook and return. First class seats in F&M coach 2 must be reserved in advance.
Photo Stop at Alna Center
Passengers returning southbound to Sheepscot will be allowed to disembark from the train at Alna Center to photograph the passing northbound train. Note that passengers will not be allowed to switch trains at Alna Center. (There will be no photo meet at Alna Center aboard the 3pm departure.)
First Class in Coach 2
Limited seating in historic Franklin and Megantic coach 2, built in 1903 and lovingly restored by Maine Locomotive & Machine Works is available aboard the 10am, 12pm, and 2pm departures (behind Monson 3.) Coach 2 features plush velvet seats that can be flipped to face the direction of travel. When not in service, this car is kept on display in our museum exhibit hall. Please specify your departure time when purchasing your all-day pass to this special event.
6 O’clock Sunset Special
Once the crowds of the Annual Picnic have dispersed, join us for a special sunset trip aboard the WW&F to Trout Brook and return. We’ll also stop at Alna Center for a run-by and other surprises as the sun sets across the fields. “All -Day” Passes for the Annual Picnic day trains are not valid aboard the 6 O’clock Sunset Photo Special.
Ticketing Options and All Day Passes
For the 2026 Annual Picnic we are offering three classes of tickets:
- Single-Ride tickets in coach (or boxcar) seating aboard the 11am, 1pm, or 3pm trips behind WW&F 9.
- All-Day Passes which allow passage on ANY train in coach (or boxcar) seating. These are valid on any hourly departure from 10am to 3pm. All-Day Passes are not valid aboard the 6 O’clock Sunset Photo Special.
- First Class All-Day Passes which allow passage on ANY train in coach (or boxcar) seating AND one first class ride in F&M coach 2 at 1oam, 12pm, or 2pm. Your First Class departure time must be indicated when reserving these tickets, which we expect to sell out. All-Day Passes are not valid aboard the 6 O’clock Sunset Photo Special.
The 6 O’clock Sunset Photo Special is ticketed separately and will be limited to no more than 30 passengers.

The WW&F Annual Picnic is always full of fun and surprises – and different every year. While we can’t reveal everything we have planned (or hope to showcase) there are many other activities scheduled, including:
Book and Model Railroad Equipment Yard Sale
The WW&F archives will be selling a plethora of books, model railroad equipment, and railway memorabilia and ephemera. These items have been donated to the WW&F and deemed surplus to our Museum collection. Proceeds from this sale will fund the purchase of artifacts that fit our core mission – to preserve the WW&F and related railroads. While all gauges and scales will be represented, if you are an N scale modeler you won’t want to miss this sale as we recently received a large collection of miniature trains – including rare pieces available at fair prices.
Books, memorabilia and ephemera from railroads around New England, the US, and the world will also be offered for sale.
The Board of Directors, the Archives Committee and the museum at large are extremely thankful for this opportunity to help generate funds that help support the efforts of the archives Committee to organize, catalog and preserve our historical memorabilia.

About the WW&F Annual Picnic
Each August, for as long as anyone can remember, the friends, fans, foamers, and followers of the WW&F Railway have gathered for a day or two of camaraderie, food, and narrow gauge trains. Each year’s picnic tends to have different activities, including special trains, photo opportunities, various displays, yard sales, and of course food. The WW&F Annual Picnic is similar to a “Railfan Weekend” at other heritage railways.
