Rock the Mountain
July 11 @ 8:30 AM - 4:30 PM
Join the WW&F Volunteer corps on Saturday June 20th for a “Rock the Mountain” ballasting party!
What is ballasting? This photo shows the process pretty well – basically it’s shoveling ballast from a flatcar onto and around the tracks. Ballast keeps the rails straight and prevents the wooden cross ties from rotting. Many hands make light work.
We had to cancel the 2020 Spring Work Weekend – where upwards of 150 folks from around the US descend upon our railroad to do this very task. Now, it’s up to us Mainers (and folks from out-of-state who have quarantined) to get the job back on track!
All ages welcome, but younger volunteers are the responsibility of their attending parent/guardian. We’ll supply the tools and supplies – you provide the labor.
The work train will leave Sheepscot Station (97 Cross Road, Alna, Maine) at 8:30am. Please bring lunch – as no lunch is provided. Dress for the weather, and wear work clothes. Bring work gloves. Work boots (preferably steel toed) are required. The work train will return to Sheepscot Station sometime around lunch. A second ballasting session may occur after lunch on certain Saturdays, based on weather and crew availability.
Please follow state-issued instructions regarding mask use, social distancing, hand washing, out-of-state quarantine restrictions, etc. Participants in “Rock the Mountain” should not be members of “high risk” groups, as identified by the state. Of course, if you are sick, experiencing symptoms, or have been in recent contact with someone who has, please do not attend this (or any other) event.
This is a great opportunity to work off those extra COVID-19 pounds; or take out your frustrations against… (too many things to list).
Summer is here… let’s ROCK ON!
