Maine is the northeast-most state in the US. Boston, Mass. is the nearest large city. I-95 is the only interstate highway going into Maine. Amtrak’s Downeaster train runs between Boston North Station and Brunswick, ME. Some major airlines fly into Portland International Jetport (PWM) and Bangor International Airport (BGR), plus there are many smaller airports that people can fly into, such as Owl’s Head near Rockland. Greyhound and Concord Trailways have buses into Maine from Boston. There’s also a bus into Maine from New Brunswick.
Once you get to Maine, your best bet to get around is by car, as local public transportation outside of the larger cities is nearly non-existent. I-95 connects all the major cities of Maine and exits into Canada near Houlton. US Route 1 snakes along the coast between Kittery and Machias, then follows the Canadian border north to Fort Kent. Most public transit is localized to the larger population areas. Concord Trailways does have a coastal route along Rt 1 between Portland and Bangor, with a stop in Wiscasset.
Alna is located north of the Midcoast town of Wiscasset. It is approximately 50 miles northeast of Portland, Maine’s largest city. Other nearby cities are Lewiston (50 miles east), Augusta (30 miles southeast), and Bangor (100 miles southwest).
The Museum is located at 97 Cross Road, in Alna. Alna’s major road is State Route 218, traveling north and south through the town. The Museum is located on the southern end of town, on the western side of Rt 218. Alna has 3 village areas and no well-defined town center. Cross Road is approximately 4.5 miles north of Wiscasset and US Route 1.
There are road signs on Rt 218 for those driving from the north and from the south. Additional road signs are located on Route 1 in Newcastle, pointing to the Sheepscot Road and guiding the driver to the Museum.
